Literature for young adults

While the genre is targeted to teenagers, approximately half of YA readers are adults. The subject matter and genres of YA correlate with the age and experience of the protagonist. We’re living in a golden age of young-adult literature, when books ostensibly written for teens are equally adored by readers of every generation.

A number of you noted last week that you’d like to see us address the issue of finding high quality books for older children, particularly books for teens. So today we’re doing just that! But while the publishing industry markets these books primarily to young adults, that’s not always who reads them. This book is an essential resource for preservice educators to help young adults understand and appreciate the excellent literature that is available to them. However, the label has grown to include what is called Middle Grade Literature , aimed at older children from to 1 and New Adult Literature , aimed at young adults from to 30.


These labels, though, are not stable boundaries. Faculty and students are nationally and internationally recognized scholars in many literary genres.

Students in this program pursue disciplined and rigorous inquiries in the history, evolution and current trends of children’s and young adult literature. In this day and age, the focus that reading a novel requires proves difficult to motivate young people. This survey course introduces classic and contemporary literature considered appropriate for young adults, that bridges the gap between children’s and adult books. It provides educators with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate young adult literature into classrooms and libraries.


For each edition they have highlighted new and interesting trends and illustrated them with lively discussions of well-written books. I have used the booklists to find books that fit into certain genres or help students find a great book about a certain topic.
